I’m still up at 4:44am still working on freelance work. Still a bit drunk. The only thing keeping me going at this point is QoTSA. What is it with musicians who grew up in the desert having an affinity and/or gearing the music they write based more off of ‘sounds’? Something Zappa and Homme share…though Zappa wrote in a more articulated, comprehensive manner, composing epic songs about weird things for weirdnesses’ sake. Josh Homme just sounds like he wants to talk about women and getting laid all while extolling the merits of being a social outcast.
And somehow Zappa grew to appreciate a composer as bizarre as Varese. Look up Ionisation when you get a chance. On the other hand, Homme’s riffs sound like he grew up listening to ZZ Top with a little Eddie Cochran.
The rate at where rock is going…there’s a mere few bands out there in my mind who still keep the rock alive. But there is an overwhelming amount who don’t get rock. I know every era champions bands that are just plain awful, but Kings of Leon? Yikes. If that’s where we’re at as far as today’s rock icons go, we are fucked. As someone who has had way too much time to play their instruments as of late, I’m just gonna posit that the downfall of rock will be people’s carelessness when it comes to musicianship. It scares me that people can create albums with purely-electronic based music…the human element is almost completely removed from the actual song.
I just don’t understand how you can have music without any part of it coming from the touch of a living, breathing thing. Makes no sense.
